FATIMA BIO TAKES FIGHT TO THE WORLD STAGE — PUSHES FOR 27 NOVEMBER AS INTERNATIONAL DAY TO END CHILD MARRIAGE

First Lady of Sierra Leone, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, has launched a global campaign for 27 November to be officially proclaimed the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, the First Lady said the proposed day would serve as an annual global platform to renew political commitment, strengthen advocacy, raise awareness, promote accountability and accelerate concrete action against child, early and forced marriage.

According to Dr. Bio, setting aside a dedicated day on the international calendar will help keep the issue at the top of global priorities. She stressed that millions of girls around the world continue to lose their childhood, education, and future opportunities because of practices that cut short their lives and potential.

The First Lady argued that an International Day would give governments, civil society, traditional leaders, and development partners a fixed moment each year to assess progress, share solutions, and recommit to ending the practice. She added that the initiative aligns with Sierra Leone’s own domestic efforts to protect girls and empower women through education, health services, and legal reforms.

By taking the proposal to the UN, Dr. Bio is calling on member states to back the resolution and turn 27 November into a day of action, reflection, and renewed urgency to ensure that no girl is forced into marriage before she is ready.
