By David K.Fengai

Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh has led a high-level government delegation on an inspection of ongoing multi-million-dollar infrastructure projects at the Goderich campus of Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU) – a bold step in transforming technical education in Sierra Leone.

The projects, being implemented under the government’s Education Sector Support Project funded by BADEA, aim to improve the quality of technical and higher education through expanded academic facilities and modern infrastructure.

During the visit, the delegation assessed progress on several critical facilities designed to improve teaching, learning and working conditions.

The ongoing expansion includes a new faculty building with 18 lecture rooms, an amphitheatre and a multipurpose auditorium. Other facilities include newly constructed student hostels for male and female students, staff accommodation and a central administrative building intended to improve the university’s operations and governance.

At Congo Cross campus, the VP noted students had already begun using some rehabilitated classrooms, while at Goderich he expressed satisfaction with quality of work.

Government officials highlighted that the projects are central to President Julius Maada Bio’s human capital development agenda. The facilities are expected to strengthen research capacity, ease classroom overcrowding and create a more conducive academic environment.

Minister of Technical and Higher Education Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie said the government recognised the progress achieved while acknowledging that more work remained to be done, stressing that infrastructure investments must translate into tangible improvements in quality.

The VP, acting on President Bio’s directive to monitor government projects nationwide, emphasized: “My role is to support contractors, project managers and consultants so they can deliver.” Project managers assured timely completion as the government pushes to modernise tertiary institutions and equip students with practical skills for national development.
