“THE CONSTITUTION IS OUR GUIDE: APC DEPUTY SPOKESMAN BREAKS SILENCE ON PPRC LEADERSHIP DISPUTE”

The All People’s Congress (APC) Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Mohamed Pope Kamara, has publicly addressed the ongoing legal dispute between the party and the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC), saying the matter is about constitutional clarity, not political favoritism.

Speaking during a recent media engagement, Kamara said the PPRC is constrained by the provisions of the APC Constitution, which the Commission itself has reviewed. According to him, the case reached the courts after Alieu Suma, APC Port Loko District Chairman, filed to seek a clear interpretation of those provisions.

Kamara stressed that the PPRC’s position should not be seen as the Commission backing any faction within the APC. “It is an attempt to operate within the provisions of the APC Constitution,” he explained.

At the heart of the matter is a PPRC directive now before the court, with particular reference to Section 39(5) of the PPRC Act. Kamara argued that while the section gives the Commission authority to extend the tenure of a party executive, it does not empower it to decide who should constitute an interim body.

“If there is a need for an interim body, the PPRC Act does not give the Commission the mandate to determine who should form such a body,” Kamara maintained.

He further clarified the limits of internal party authority, stating that the APC National Chairman does not have the power to make unilateral decisions. In his capacity as Chairman of the National Advisory Council (NAC), the Chairman is bound to operate strictly within the directives and provisions of the APC Constitution.

The dispute continues to raise critical questions about the balance of power between political parties, their leadership structures, and the regulatory role of the PPRC under both the APC Constitution and the PPRC Act.

For the APC, Kamara says the focus remains on upholding party rules and ensuring that any resolution comes through due process and respect for the constitution.
