LONDON —Sierra Leone’s financial sector is set to take centre stage on the international platform as Dr. Walton Ekundayo Gilpin, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Rokel Commercial Bank (RCB), prepares to receive one of Africa’s most distinguished recognitions — the African Banker of the Year 2026 Award.
Dr. Gilpin has been named the recipient of the prestigious honour by The Voice Achievers Awards, with the formal presentation scheduled for August 21, 2026, at the London Hilton, Kensington. The ceremony is expected to bring together prominent African leaders, business executives, professionals and influential personalities to celebrate outstanding contributions to Africa’s development.
The recognition places Dr. Gilpin in an elite company of past Voice Achievers Award recipients, including the late former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda, former International Criminal Court Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda, and former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma.
At the heart of the award is Dr. Gilpin’s leadership at Rokel Commercial Bank, where he is credited with steering the institution from a loss-making position towards becoming one of Sierra Leone’s most profitable banking institutions. His tenure has been characterized by a strong emphasis on financial inclusion, digital transformation, youth empowerment and customer-focused banking.
One of the most visible examples of this transformation is the Rokel Sim Korpor mobile banking platform, which has expanded access to financial services and brought modern banking solutions closer to ordinary Sierra Leoneans, including market women, small-scale traders and young entrepreneurs.
The award comes at a particularly significant moment in Dr. Gilpin’s career. On May 1, 2026, he was appointed Vice President I of the West African Bankers’ Association (WABA), strengthening his influence within the region’s banking and financial integration agenda.
Under his leadership, Rokel Commercial Bank has also begun looking beyond Sierra Leone’s borders, with exploration of opportunities in neighbouring Liberia signalling ambitions for greater regional expansion and competitiveness.
Dr. Gilpin’s rise has been supported by an impressive academic and professional background. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, before earning a Master of Science in Economic Policy Management from Columbia University in New York.
His professional experience extends far beyond commercial banking. He previously served as an advisor to the Commonwealth Secretariat in the United Kingdom, where he was involved in financial restructuring programmes across more than 38 member countries. He has also contributed to the Bank of Sierra Leone and worked as a consultant with major international institutions, including the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
In accepting the recognition, Dr. Gilpin emphasized that the honour should not be viewed as a personal victory but as a collective achievement of the entire Rokel Commercial Bank family and the millions of Sierra Leoneans who continue to embrace financial inclusion.
He highlighted the contribution of market women, small-scale traders and young people who have adopted digital banking solutions, stressing that access to banking should be regarded as a fundamental right rather than a luxury.
He further pointed to RCB’s commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance principles, youth empowerment and a human-centred banking culture as essential pillars of the institution’s transformation.
As the lights of the London Hilton prepare to shine on August 21, the story of Dr. Walton Gilpin represents more than today.
