Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority, SLCAA, Madam Musayeroh Barrie, has opened up about her path in aviation, offering a message of resilience, growth, and national pride.

Speaking during a recent engagement, Madam Barrie traced her career from its earliest days to leading the country’s aviation regulator.

“My aviation journey began in 2013! Through experience, training, and continuous learning, I progressed into aviation leadership,” she stated.

She said her rise was not accidental, but the result of discipline, mentorship, and a commitment to mastering every role along the way. From technical operations to policy and oversight, she emphasized that continuous learning is the foundation of credible leadership in a safety-critical industry like aviation.

Madam Barrie also used the moment to challenge cultural barriers that often discourage women and young people from pursuing careers in technical fields.

“We shouldn’t limit ourself due to cultural stereotypes or challenges we face, but rather persevere and apply our full ability in anything we do,” she said.

Under her leadership, SLCAA has prioritized safety compliance, staff capacity building, and modernizing regulatory systems to align with international standards. Colleagues describe her as hands-on and results-driven — qualities they say are repositioning Sierra Leone’s aviation sector for greater regional competitiveness.

Her story is now inspiring a new generation of Sierra Leoneans, especially girls, to see aviation not as out of reach, but as a field where talent, hard work, and determination can take them to great heights.

“When you believe in your ability and refuse to be limited, the sky is not the limit — it’s just the beginning,” Madam Barrie added.
