Connaught Hospital will provide free minimally invasive chest surgeries from Sept. 1 to 4, 2026, hospital officials announced this week — a landmark move set to expand access to specialised care for eligible patients across Sierra Leone.

The programme will focus on thoracoscopic procedures, commonly performed using video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). This advanced technique allows surgeons to operate inside the chest through small incisions instead of large open cuts. The result: less pain, smaller scars, lower risk of infection, and significantly faster recovery times for patients.

Hospital authorities said the initiative is part of ongoing measures to improve access to advanced surgical services, particularly for patients who may not afford such procedures.
