“DIALOGUE OVER DISPUTE: GBENSE CHIEFDOM GIVES KUST THE LAND TO BUILD KONO’S FUTURE”

A long-standing dispute over land meant for the Kono University of Science and Technology (KUST) has finally been resolved, paving the way for major development in Kono District.

On Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026, Gbense Chiefdom authorities formally signed and handed over a Deed of Gift to the Vice-Chancellor and staff of KUST. The parcel, located along Council Road in Koidu Town, Moinde Kor Section, was transferred following months of engagements facilitated by the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs (MLGCA). The Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, District Office of National Security, civil society groups, and other stakeholders also supported the process.

Speaking at the ceremony, Acting Minister Alfred Moi Jamiru commended all parties for choosing dialogue. He described the land as strategically important to KUST and said its development would create jobs, improve skills training, and boost economic activity in Kono. He also acknowledged the support of Minister Amb. Tamba Lamina and Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie for pushing the resolution forward.

Permanent Secretary Prince Alex Soriba said the agreement shows how cooperation can remove bottlenecks to development. Senior District Officer William Ngegbai noted the dispute had sparked community concern and social media debate, but unity prevailed.

For KUST, the timing is critical. Project Coordinator Ing. Monica Sellu Kamara confirmed that contractors and consultants are expected back in September for the next construction phase. Vice Chancellor Prof. Tamba Jamiru outlined ambitious plans beyond classrooms — a knowledge hub with a museum, library, conference hall, and hospitality facilities to drive education, tourism, and investment.

Paramount Chief Komba Sangor Korgbende Kaimachiande IV and Chiefdom Speaker Chief Aiah Moses Kamanda both welcomed the transfer and pledged continued support.

With the Deed of Gift now in KUST’s hands, attention shifts to construction. For Kono, the message is clear: when chiefdom, government, and community work together, education wins and development follows.
