EU UNLOCKS €70,000 CULTURAL OPPORTUNITY FOR SIERRA LEONEAN ARTISTS AS AFRICA-EUROPE CREATIVE BRIDGE WIDENS:

By David K.Fengai

Sierra Leonean artists, cultural organisations, and creative entrepreneurs have been presented with a major new opportunity to take their artistic works beyond national borders following the launch of a €70,000 cultural grant programme aimed at strengthening artistic exchange between Africa and Europe.

The initiative, launched under the Africa-Europe Partnerships for Culture (AEPC) programme, opened applications on July 9, 2026, and will remain open until September 30, 2026. It is designed to support artists, cultural organisations, and event promoters seeking to expand their international reach while creating stronger and more sustainable partnerships across the two continents.

The programme is being implemented by the Goethe-Institut and Expertise France, in partnership with the Institut français, with financial support from the European Union. Its central objective is to promote cultural mobility, collaboration, visibility, and meaningful exchange between African and European creative sectors.

Under the programme, successful applicants can receive grants ranging from €30,000 to €70,000, providing significant financial support for mobility-related expenses, including international travel, visas, accommodation, and the transportation of stage and artistic equipment. The funding can cover up to 70 per cent of eligible project costs, while applicants are expected to provide the remaining 30 per cent through co-financing.

The initiative offers opportunities for a wide range of artistic projects, including touring productions across at least three African countries, performances in Europe, and participation in major festivals and cultural events involving multiple African artistic teams.

Importantly, the programme places strong emphasis on inclusion, sustainability, accessibility, and youth participation. Proposals that provide opportunities for emerging artists, incorporate environmentally responsible practices, and make cultural activities more accessible are particularly encouraged.

The initiative forms part of the wider Connect & Create programme, which seeks to promote more equitable and sustainable cultural relationships between sub-Saharan Africa and Europe.

Eligible applicants include performing arts companies, music groups, artistic collectives, cultural organisations, and event promoters based in any of the 48 sub-Saharan African countries or the 27 European Union member states.

Applications are to be submitted online through the Institut français platform. An informational webinar was held on July 16, 2026, to provide prospective applicants with further guidance on the programme and application process.

Proposals are expected to undergo assessment by a selection committee in December 2026, with successful applicants scheduled to be announced in January 2027. Approved projects are expected to be implemented between February and December 2027.

For Sierra Leone’s growing creative industry, the initiative could represent more than financial assistance. It could provide a valuable gateway for local musicians, performers, cultural groups, and creative organisations to secure international exposure, build professional networks, and place Sierra Leonean artistic talent on larger African and European stages.

With the application deadline approaching, artists and cultural organisations across Sierra Leone are being encouraged to carefully examine the eligibility requirements and prepare strong proposals that demonstrate creativity, impact, sustainability, inclusion, and genuine potential for Africa-Europe cultural collaboration.
