“SHAPING THE FUTURE OF DEMOCRACY: ECSL BRINGS ELECTORAL EDUCATION TO SIERRA LEONE’S UNIVERSITIES”

The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) is taking a historic step to deepen democracy by bringing electoral and political education directly into the nation’s universities.

In collaboration with the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) and the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, ECSL has convened the Tertiary Education Commission and representatives from 12 universities in a Technical Working Group at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown. The goal: to finalise a draft curriculum that will integrate electoral and political education into university programs across Sierra Leone.

The engagement is part of the implementation of Recommendation 13 of the Cross-Party Tripartite Recommendations, which calls for civic and electoral learning to be embedded within the country’s education system.

According to ECSL, the initiative is designed to strengthen civic awareness, improve democratic participation, and equip young people with practical knowledge about elections, governance, and political processes. By targeting tertiary institutions, the Commission aims to reach future leaders, policymakers, and voters at a critical stage in their development.

Stakeholders at the meeting emphasized that an informed electorate is the foundation of credible elections. Integrating these topics into university coursework is expected to reduce misinformation, increase voter turnout, and build a culture of accountability among graduates entering public and political life.

With this move, ECSL is signaling that democracy is not just practiced at the ballot box — it must also be taught, understood, and lived. As the draft curriculum advances, Sierra Leone’s universities could become key hubs for producing a generation that values participation, dialogue, and the rule of law.
