By David K.Fengai
Sierra Leone has scored a landmark victory on the global financial stage.
In a significant milestone for the nation’s financial sector, Dr. Walton Ekundayo Gilpin, FPMA, HCIB, MIA, PEPM, COOR, Managing Director and CEO of Rokel Commercial Bank (RCB), has been named African Banker of the Year 2026 by The Voice Achievers Awards.
The prestigious ceremony was held on August 21, 2026 at the London Hilton, Kensington, an annual event that celebrates exceptional African leaders and professionals whose work is driving transformative change across the continent.
This recognition places Dr. Gilpin among an elite circle of past Voice Achievers honorees. Previous recipients include the late President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia (2012), Her Excellency Fatou Bensouda, former Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court and current Gambian Ambassador to the UK (2012/2013), and former President Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone (2013).
Under Dr. Gilpin’s leadership, RCB has redefined commercial banking in Sierra Leone through innovation, financial inclusion, and bold reforms that have expanded access to capital for businesses, youth, and rural communities. His vision has positioned Rokel Commercial Bank not just as a national institution, but as a model for progressive banking across West Africa.
The African Banker of the Year award is more than personal recognition. It is a testament to Sierra Leone’s growing reputation for leadership, resilience, and excellence in finance. It signals to investors and partners worldwide that Sierra Leonean institutions are ready to compete and lead at the highest levels.
As the continent looks to the future, Dr. Gilpin’s achievement reminds us that homegrown leadership can deliver world-class results and inspire the next generation of African bankers.
